Retail stores’ policies benefit shoplifters

Summary

This article is about shoplifters benefiting from store policies, retail companies worldwide refusing to prosecute shoplifters because of the post-arrest cost and the risk of hurting the brand’s image. This causes a lot of shoplifting cases to go undetected. U.S, is averaging about 550,000 cases of shoplifting per day, and more than $13 billion in stolen stolen items from retailers each year. To make up for the money lost they raise the price. Experts are saying that the economy has weakened and shoplifting has increased. Companies are cracking down on shoplifters by setting up cameras, security guards, etc. Also companies are asking for a receipt to make a return, because most shoplifters go to another store to return the item and get money. If they stop shoplifters now later on there will be a lower number of them, and companies wont have to raise theeing prices to make up for the money lost. There have been 19 arrests in November, December there were 31; and in January there were 29 at the Mall at Wellington Green.

Connection

In the chapter they talk about companies charging shoplifters and charging them, but in the real world companies are letting people go because they don't want to make false arrests and pay the extra cost of prosecuting the thieves. Also the book talks about charging them if they have charges from before, but in the article they are saying that they don't even check, they just let them go. Also the textbook talks about having cameras and security guards, companies are doing does to decrease the number of shoplifters. The best way to stop stealing is to prevent it in the first place, companies arent doing this they are letting the thieves go, and by doing this they think they can do this all day, and they come back to steal some more.

Reflection

I think companies should deal with shoplifters in the first place, they shouldn't let them go. If you do let them go they will come back and you will loose a lot in merchandise. It may cost some money to prosecute the thieves but this will prevent them from coming back, this will save you lots of money. If the companies are loosing money, the only way they can back it back is why increasing the prices of the goods being sold. This effects the customers greatly, they have to pay extra money because of the shoplifters. This isn't right because policies are supposed to help out employees not the shoplifters.
